Mr. Jean Piette has a remarkable 50 years of experience in both environmental law and the development of environmental policy. He presently acts as senior counsel in environmental law and climate change law at the BCF law firm. Previously, he was senior partner at Norton Rose Fulbright, where he chaired the firm’s environmental law team. He was rated by Chambers as one of Canada’s only three Senior Statespersons in environmental law. He provides legal counsel and strategic advice on matters of Québec, federal and international environmental law. He advises clients on environmental permit applications, environmental due diligence for business transactions and environmental compliance issues and strategies. He also provides assistance to clients in the areas of mining law and of land use planning law. Mr. Piette has represented clients in negotiations with environmental authorities, in environmental litigation before administrative and judicial tribunals and in private transactions involving environmental problems.

He was for many years a member of the International Council on Environmental Law. He has taught environmental law in B.A. and graduate programs at Université Laval. Before launching a career in private practice, Mr. Piette worked successively for the Environment Protection Services, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Environment of Québec, where he occupied the position of General Counsel. He was nominated “Advocatus Emeritus” by the Barreau du Québec in 2013.
