Murray Rankin Joins the Canadian Centre for Environmental Arbitration and Mediation

Respected environmental lawyer and former cabinet minister brings decades of legal and public service experience to the national dispute resolution centre.

Victoria, BC – May 26, 2025 — The Canadian Centre for Environmental Arbitration and Mediation (CCEAM) is proud to welcome Murray Rankin as its newest member.


A leading figure in environmental and Indigenous law in Canada, Mr. Rankin joins CCEAM as part of its mission to provide expert and impartial dispute resolution services for complex environmental and Indigenous matters nationwide.


Currently Counsel at Arvay Finlay LLP, Mr. Rankin brings a career spanning law, academia, and public service. A former professor of law at the University of Victoria, he holds law degrees from the University of Toronto and Harvard Law School.


Murray Rankin served as Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation in British Columbia from 2020 to 2024, and briefly as Attorney General and Minister of Housing. Federally, he represented Victoria in the House of Commons from 2012 to 2019 and held key critic roles, including Justice and Health, as well as NDP House Leader. He also chaired the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency, overseeing Canada’s federal intelligence operations.


His appointment reflects CCEAM’s commitment to bringing together Canada’s foremost legal minds to address the increasingly complex challenges at the intersection of environmental protection, Indigenous rights, and dispute resolution. With Mr. Rankin on board, the Centre is well-positioned to expand its reach and impact across the country.
